What is If Wishes Could Kill?
If Wishes Could Kill is a Netflix Korean horror series released on April 24, 2026. Set at Seorin High School, the show follows a group of students who discover Girigo — a supernatural mobile app. The app grants any wish, but triggers a 24-hour countdown to the wisher's death. Within three days of release, the show reached #1 in Korea and #4 globally among non-English Netflix titles.
How the Girigo curse works
The curse feeds on negative emotion — jealousy, rage, guilt, grief. The stronger the negative feeling behind a wish, the more powerful the effect. The app operates only between midnight and 4am. Each user gets one wish per night. After the wish is recorded, the countdown begins invisibly.
The "toll" — a recurring phrase in the show — refers to the name the curse extracts from the wisher. Giving your name to the app is what binds the curse to you.
Origin of the curse
The curse originates with Kwon Si-won, a student overwhelmed by guilt and rage after a traumatic event at Seorin High. She used Girigo herself, binding her own spirit to the app instead of dying — turning it into a permanent supernatural entity. Si-won's spirit exists within the app, and the curse grows stronger as more people use it with negative intent.
The ending explained (Season 1)
The finale reveals that breaking the curse requires eliminating the emotional fuel that sustains it — not destroying the app, but resolving the original trauma. The lead characters confront the source event rather than the app itself. Si-won's spirit is not destroyed but "quieted" — the curse is suspended, not ended. The final scene shows the app still exists on one character's phone, screen dark, praying hands still.
This deliberately open ending sets up Season 2.
Is Girigo curse over?
No. The show ends with the curse suspended, not broken. The app still exists in-universe. The implication is that another wave of negative emotion at the school could reactivate it.
Season 2 — what we know
As of May 1, 2026, Netflix has not posted an official Season 2 announcement in its public title page or newsroom. The ending leaves room for another season, but renewal should be treated as unconfirmed until Netflix says so.
About the app called Girigo
Girigo is the cursed mobile app inside the story. Real Girigo / 기리고 listings also exist, but they are wish-recording experiences, not proof that the fictional curse is real.
